Ijaw National Congress Urges Reconciliation for Peace in Rivers State

A group operating under the banner of the Ijaw National Congress Worldwide has issued a fervent plea to the immediate past governor of Rivers State, Mr. Nyesom Wike, urging him to foster peace with his successor, Governor Siminialayi Fubara, in the interest of the state’s tranquility and progress.

The call for reconciliation was articulated in a statement released by the group’s President, Prof Benjamin Okaba, which was shared with the press on Sunday. Expressing dismay over the ongoing political discord in the state, particularly between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, the group emphasized its commitment to truth and good governance.

In the statement, the association lauded the citizens of Rivers State for their resolute stance against the purported planned impeachment of Governor Fubara. It implored Wike not to disrupt the current administration in the state.

The statement read, “We urgently call on all political players in Rivers State to fulfill their duty to their constituents and immediately desist from any further actions capable of tarnishing the sanctity of the office, institution, and person of the Governor of all Rivers people.”

“We specifically appeal to Chief Nyesom Wike to retract from fostering any division against the government of the day under the guise of protecting his ‘structure.’ The political structure to which he refers should not be conflated with the structure of the government of Governor Fubara as a singular entity under anyone’s control.”

“On our part, the Ijaw National Congress Worldwide, at all levels and organs across Ijawland and the diaspora, should be vigilant in fulfilling the sacred responsibility of overseeing and safeguarding the interests of our people anywhere and anytime.”

The group also extended commendation to President Bola Tinubu, elder statesman Chief Edwin Clarke, and other prominent Nigerians for their intervention in the crisis. It urged the people of the state to remain vigilant, steadfast, and continue cooperating with law enforcement agencies to maintain peace in Rivers State and the Niger Delta as a whole.
