Shaibu Announces Candidacy for 2024 Edo Governorship Election

Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, has officially thrown his hat into the ring for the 2024 governorship election in the state.

In a pre-recorded speech aired on Monday, Shaibu declared his intention to vie for the governorship position under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Following the formal announcement, Shaibu inaugurated his campaign office in Benin City, surrounded by enthusiastic party supporters.

“After all the consultations we have made, we needed to now make the answer to our consultations known to our people. And the answer is clear: they have asked me to run,” said the 53-year-old, who has served as the deputy governor in Edo since 2016.

Shaibu emphasized his commitment to the development and growth of the state, asserting that he had put his life on the line for its betterment. He expressed a strong determination to make Edo State great again.

The deputy governor had previously faced a contentious situation with Governor Obaseki, resulting in the forceful relocation of his office outside the Government House. However, he later extended an apology to his principal, seeking forgiveness.

Edo is among the eight states with off-cycle governorship polls due to ongoing litigations and court judgments. The other states involved in off-cycle governorship polls include Anambra, Bayelsa, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Osun, and Ondo.
