Group rejects Nigerian govt’s proposed electricity tariff increment
The Coalition for Affordable and Regular Electricity, CARE, Oyo chapter, has kicked against the proposed upward review of electricity tariff by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC.
The CARE in a statement jointly signed by its conveners, Akinbodunshe Shadrack and Ayodeji Adigun on Tuesday in Ibadan, condemned the proposed hike in the electricity tariff effective from Sept. 1.
According to the statement, the attention of CARE has been drawn to the news of the recent approval of a new hike in electricity tariff to a value between N42.44 and N58.94 per KWh.
“This depends on the respective class of the electricity consumers. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission NERC has also reportedly issued a subsequent directive to all the Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs) to commence the implementation of the new tariff from Sept 1.
“CARE rejects both the approval of the new tariff hike and the subsequent directive by the NERC.
“This tariff hike at a time when the mass of the Nigerian working people are still struggling to cope with the adverse effects of socio-economic dislocations occasioned by both the COVID-19 pandemic and the pre-existing economic crisis, is inhuman.
“CARE does not see any justification for a new hike in electricity tariff given the fact that the previous electricity tariff hikes have not translated into any significant improvement in the electricity supply and its availability.
“Instead, the electricity supply remains epileptic while the mass majority of the working people are forced by DISCOs to pay heavily for darkness,” the statement reads.
Meanwhile, Busolami Tunwase, the Public Relations Officer, Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) told NAN that the company had not communicated its customers about any hike in electricity tariff.
“I’m not aware that IBEDC has communicated any hike in tariff to customers.
“If it’s a NERC directive, then please speak to NERC,” Ms Tunwase said.
Speaking on the issue, Shaibu Shittu, the Deputy General Manager, Consumers Affairs Division, NERC, Abuja said the increase on electricity tariff was not a rumour per se; saying it is a standard.
“As a commission, what we normally do is to do the standard operations,” Mr Shittu said.

Nigeria Faces Total Blackout as Power Grid Collapses
In a severe blow to the nation’s power supply, Nigeria’s electricity grid suffered a total collapse in the early hours of Thursday, September 14, 2023, resulting in a widespread blackout affecting the entire country.
The grid’s complete failure occurred at approximately 12:40 a.m., causing a significant disruption in the supply of electricity to power distributors nationwide. Multiple sources within the power sector and various electricity distribution companies confirmed this unfortunate incident on Thursday morning.
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Plc promptly issued a formal notice titled, ‘Notice of Total System Collapse,’ to alert its customers about the situation.
In the notice, the company stated, “The EEDC wishes to inform her esteemed customers of a total system collapse which occurred at 12:40 am today, September 14, 2023. This has resulted in the loss of supply currently being experienced across the network. Due to this development, all our interface TCN (Transmission Company of Nigeria) stations are out of supply, and we are unable to provide service to our customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo states. We are on standby awaiting detailed information of the collapse and restoration of supply from the National Control Centre, Osogbo.”
The notice was signed by Emeka Ezeh, the Head of Corporate Communications at EEDC.
As of now, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), which manages the national grid, has not released an official statement regarding the incident.
It is worth noting that just a week ago, the TCN celebrated 400 days of power grid stability in Nigeria, claiming that there had been no grid collapses during that period.

FCT residents decry epileptic power supply, urge AEDC on improved supply
Many residents and business owners in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT ), have decried the epileptic power supply being presently experienced in the territory for sometime now.
The electricity consumers, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday, decried the poor power supply to their homes and business premises.
According to them, power supply has declined recently compared to how it has been in the past few months.
Mrs Omolara Amosun, a hair stylist resident in Kuje said that the situation was bad as she had to rely on generator to operate her business.
“We don’t get electricity for a whole day. I have to depend on generator and to even get fuel to power it is difficult as most fuelling stations don’t sell in gallons.
“It has not been easy as I am losing my customers everyday and this is not good for my business.
“I want to appeal to the AEDC to do something about the poor power situation speedily,’’ she said.
Mr Linus Okoro, a welder at Lugbe, said that the situation was terrible as they don’t get power for a whole day.
”The power supply has been epileptic these few weeks unlike before when we used to have constant supply.
“My appeal to AEDC and the government is to ensure improved electricity to enable us earn a living as we depend on power to run our businesses, ” he said.
Also speaking, Mrs Agnes Okiemute, a fashion designer residing at Peace Village, Lugbe said that electricity was not too regular in her area.
According to her, they only have light for four to five hours a day and sometimes they don’t get for a whole day.
“I am appealing to AEDC to improve power supply to the area to enable me run my business effectively.’’she said.
Mrs Cynthia Aregbesola, a teacher residing at Bwari, Abuja said that electricity was not constant in her area.
Aregbesola said that it was as if AEDC was playing with the light, they take it, bring it more than 10 times a day.

‘I don’t even understand what is happening, my appeal is that they should improve on electricity.”
NAN recalls that AEDC had in a statement issued on Wednesday attributed the drop in power supply in its franchise areas to insufficient load allocation.
The company said that the insufficient load allocation had compelled the company to load shed power temporarily across different areas.
The company apologised for the inconvenience caused, and appealed to its customers for understanding, while it collaborates with stakeholders to ensure power supply was improved and stablised soonest.
