Nigerian Government Announces Plans to Revamp Fire Service

The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled its intentions to revamp the Federal Fire Service, signalling a significant transformation in its scope and nomenclature.

This announcement came during the inauguration of 15 firefighting trucks and rapid response vehicles in Abuja on Wednesday, as conveyed by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

Under the proposed rebranding, the service will transition to become the “Federal Fire and Rescue Service,” with an expanded role encompassing rescue-related responsibilities.

The minister emphasized the importance of collecting information, risk assessment in various areas, and safeguarding the well-being of workers. He emphasized the imperative of preserving vehicle safety and the necessity for a comprehensive and implementable national fire and rescue framework.

Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo also underscored the potential for employment generation through the rebranded fire service. Citing examples from other nations, he highlighted the employment opportunities that the fire services have provided.

He noted that Nigeria, as one of the world’s largest economies, should not overlook the development of its fire service sector. He expressed his personal belief that the Federal Fire Service has the potential to become a major employer in Nigeria, contributing significantly to job creation.

The Controller General of the service, Jaji Abdulganiyu, presented statistics indicating the service’s achievements in the first and second quarters of the year.

According to him, the Federal Fire Service received 1,096 distressed calls, saved 111 lives, and protected properties valued at over N300 billion. He expressed optimism that these numbers would further improve in the future.

The inauguration of state-of-the-art firefighting trucks and Ford Rapid Response Vehicles marked a significant milestone in Nigeria’s fire service history, paving the way for enhanced capabilities and expanded roles as the service undergoes rebranding and transformation.
