Nigeria Faces Total Blackout as Power Grid Collapses

In a severe blow to the nation’s power supply, Nigeria’s electricity grid suffered a total collapse in the early hours of Thursday, September 14, 2023, resulting in a widespread blackout affecting the entire country.

The grid’s complete failure occurred at approximately 12:40 a.m., causing a significant disruption in the supply of electricity to power distributors nationwide. Multiple sources within the power sector and various electricity distribution companies confirmed this unfortunate incident on Thursday morning.

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Plc promptly issued a formal notice titled, ‘Notice of Total System Collapse,’ to alert its customers about the situation.

In the notice, the company stated, “The EEDC wishes to inform her esteemed customers of a total system collapse which occurred at 12:40 am today, September 14, 2023. This has resulted in the loss of supply currently being experienced across the network. Due to this development, all our interface TCN (Transmission Company of Nigeria) stations are out of supply, and we are unable to provide service to our customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo states. We are on standby awaiting detailed information of the collapse and restoration of supply from the National Control Centre, Osogbo.”

The notice was signed by Emeka Ezeh, the Head of Corporate Communications at EEDC.

As of now, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), which manages the national grid, has not released an official statement regarding the incident.

It is worth noting that just a week ago, the TCN celebrated 400 days of power grid stability in Nigeria, claiming that there had been no grid collapses during that period.
