WHO Seeks $160.4M to Combat Cholera Outbreak in Seven Countries

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has issued an urgent appeal for $160.4 million to address the escalating cholera outbreak through a global strategic preparedness, readiness, and response plan across seven nations.

In a statement released on Monday, the WHO revealed that $16.6 million has already been allocated from the WHO Contingency Fund for Emergencies for cholera response efforts spanning 2022 and 2023. The affected countries include Afghanistan, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malawi, Nigeria, Somalia, and the Syrian Arab Republic.

The comprehensive cholera statistics for 2022, published by WHO, shed light on the scale and reach of the ongoing upswing.

While data for cholera remains insufficient, reported cases to WHO in 2022 were more than double those in 2021.

In total, 44 countries reported cases, marking a 25 per cent increase from the 35 countries with reported cases in 2021.

Current data for 2023 suggests that this global upswing is persisting. Presently, 24 countries are reporting active outbreaks, with some nations grappling with acute crises.

The WHO noted that the heightened demand for cholera materials has presented significant challenges to global disease control efforts.

Since October 2022, the International Coordinating Group (ICG), responsible for managing emergency supplies of vaccines, has shifted from the standard two-dose vaccination regimen to a single-dose approach in cholera outbreak response campaigns.
