Tragedy Strikes as Building Collapses in Lagos, Leaving Three Trapped

In a devastating incident on Friday, at least three individuals, including a baby and an adult, found themselves trapped in the rubble of a collapsed building in the Ebute Meta area of Lagos State. The incident occurred in a one-storey building with a penthouse.

Margaret Adeseye, the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, shared this distressing information in a message to PUNCH Online. According to Adeseye, the emergency call reporting the building collapse on Herbert Macaulay Way, Ebute Meta, came in at 9 am on Friday. Upon the arrival of the fire service team, one person had already been successfully rescued from the debris, but three others, including a baby, remained trapped.

Adeseye confirmed ongoing efforts by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service to extract the individuals still under the wreckage. She stated, “The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service is currently attending to an emergency reported at 09:00 hours to 122, Herbert Macaulay Way, Lagos Bus Stop, Ebute Meta, Lagos, where a one-storey building with a penthouse has collapsed. Two adults and a baby, all females, are still trapped, with search and rescue ongoing.”

In a glimmer of hope, Adeseye reported that an adult female had been successfully rescued and was in stable condition. The State Emergency Response has been fully activated to address the situation.

The incident underscores the urgency of ensuring building safety standards and effective emergency response mechanisms in densely populated urban areas. Authorities are actively engaged in rescue operations to secure the trapped victims and prevent further casualties.
