Mild Earthquake Jolts Istanbul, No Injuries Reported

In a seismic event on Monday, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck just south of Istanbul, causing momentary tremors across Turkey’s largest city. Fortunately, no injuries or damages were immediately reported.

According to the AFAD emergencies service, the earthquake’s epicentre was located in the Gemlik Bay of the Marmara Sea, approximately 60 kilometres (35 miles) south of Istanbul, near the city of Bursa.

Reports indicate that the tremors were felt on both the Asian and European sides of Istanbul, prompting some residents to evacuate buildings for safety.

Istanbul, positioned near the North Anatolian Fault, one of the most active fault lines globally, is no stranger to seismic activity.

The city experienced a devastating 7.6-magnitude earthquake in 1999, claiming the lives of over 17,000 people, with the epicentre located on the eastern outskirts.

Since then, the city’s population has doubled to approximately 16 million people.

The recent seismic activity comes on the heels of two major earthquakes in southeastern Turkey in February, which resulted in the tragic loss of over 50,000 lives and extensive damage to tens of thousands of buildings across several cities.

As residents remain vigilant in this earthquake-prone region, authorities continue to emphasize the importance of preparedness and adherence to safety measures to mitigate potential risks in the future.
