Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, former governor of Borno State, has withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC) national chairmanship election, claiming that he does not wish to oppose the party’s zoning formula, which has agreed to zone the position to the north-central.

Senator Sheriff told journalists on Sunday in Abuja that he respects the party’s leader, President Muhammadu Buhari, and that he will not run again.

In his words, “I respect the President as my leader, and he must have a reason why the national chairman is zoned to the North-central. Therefore I will no longer contest unless the party leadership decides to throw it open between now and Friday.”

He congratulated his campaign team for their dedication, but stated that he will not run again unless the party changes its zoning formula.

The national convention is scheduled to take place on March 26.

The APC’s Director of Publicity, Salisu Na’inna Dambatta, stated last Wednesday that the national chairmanship position has been zoned to the North-Central, while the National Secretary is zoned to the South West.

According to the statement, the position of the Deputy National Chairman has been allocated to the South-East zone.

The ruling party said the zoning arrangement was adopted at the March 8, 2022, regular meeting of the Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC).
