With its facility in the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja, New Material Nigeria Company Limited, a member of the China National Building Materials Group (CNBM), has introduced a new product known as Fiber Cement Board into the Nigerian market.

Mr. Jackie Daiyui, the firm’s Managing Director, told reporters in Kuje that Nigeria was the first country outside China to manufacture the product, which is an alternative to gypson board.

He said a plant is being built in Lagos to complement the one in Abuja, and that more will be built in the coming years across the 36 states of the federation.

In his words, “We want to change Nigerian’s lives for the better that is why we built this factory in Abuja and that means we have stopped importing the product into Nigeria but manufacturing locally.

“While the Abuja factory will serve local demand, the one in Lagos is being built for export basically.”

He explained that while the factory is operating, Nigerians are being trained on the technology as well as other aspects in order to ensure that the project is handled by Nigerians in the near future. He stressed that the most important aspect is that materials are sourced locally, ensuring that it is made in Nigeria.

“Weather resistant, water resistant, fire resistant, sound proof, shatter resistant, minimal shrinkage, flexible, and termite resistant,” he claimed of Fiber Cement Board.

Daiyui also stated that $60 million will be set aside for Nigeria, and that the company has already hired Nigerians into management positions. He also stated that the company would collaborate with universities, polytechnics, and research institutes to continually improve product quality and innovation.
