China Expresses Disappointment Over US Veto of UN Resolution on Israel-Hamas Conflict

China has conveyed its deep disappointment regarding the United States’ decision to veto a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for a “humanitarian pause” in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, expressed China’s stance, emphasizing the need for the Security Council to fulfil its role in achieving a ceasefire and putting an end to the hostilities.

For the past 12 days, Israel has conducted a relentless bombardment of the Gaza Strip in response to a series of cross-border attacks by Hamas on October 7, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,400 people. Tragically, more than 3,470 individuals have lost their lives in Gaza as a consequence of Israeli airstrikes, as reported by health officials.

Amid this devastating conflict, Gazans have been sifting through the wreckage of a severely damaged hospital. This heartbreaking task has involved the recovery of bodies and body parts, some of which were placed in body bags, while others were shrouded in white cloths and blankets. The scale of the destruction has left many expressing their shock and dismay.

One particularly horrific incident took place when a strike on the Ahli Arab Hospital claimed the lives of an estimated 471 people. Health authorities in Gaza, under the rule of Hamas, attribute the explosion to an Israeli airstrike, one among many conducted in response to Hamas’s October 7 attack. In contrast, Israel has denied responsibility, instead pointing to a malfunctioning militant rocket as the cause.

During his visit to Israel, U.S. President Joe Biden expressed solidarity with Israel and supported their claim that Palestinian militants were responsible for the devastating hospital strike in Gaza. Biden conveyed his deep sadness and outrage over the incident, acknowledging the challenges in determining responsibility in the midst of a complex and tragic conflict.

He stated, “I was deeply saddened and outraged by the explosion at the hospital in Gaza yesterday. And based on what I’ve seen, it appears as though it was done by the other team, not you. But there’s a lot of people out there not sure so we have to overcome a lot of things.”
