Senegal defeated Egypt 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out to win their first Africa Cup of Nations championship after the final ended goalless at the end of extra time on Sunday.

Sadio Mane made amends for missing from the spot in normal time by scoring the deciding penalty.

Mane had seen Mohamed Abou Gabal save his seventh-minute penalty at the Olembe Stadium in Yaounde, but Egypt were unable to capitalise, and the game proceeded to extra time for the fourth time in this Cup of Nations.

Salah was set to take Egypt’s fifth penalty, but after Mohamed Abdelmonem’s kick hit the post and Mohanad Lasheen’s kick was saved by Edouard Mendy, the Liverpool star was left frustrated and on the edge of tears as his club team-mate Mane prepared to deliver the final blow.

Senegal has won the Cup of Nations for the first time after two previous final defeats, while Egypt missed out on a record-extending seventh continental title, which would have also been a first for Salah.
