Zulum orders demolition of illegal brothels, criminal dens in Maiduguri

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has issued an order for the demolition of illegal brothels and criminal dens notorious for prostitution, gangsterism, and other illicit activities in the Maiduguri metropolis, to be carried out within 72 hours.

The directive was given during the governor’s visit to one of these locations, situated at ‘Bayan Quarters,’ a settlement in proximity to the railway staff quarters in the metropolis. The area has long been associated with gangster activities, criminal operations, and the exploitation of minors for commercial sex work.

Governor Zulum expressed deep concern about the growing prevalence of criminal activities linked to these illegal brothels and criminal dens, including prostitution, drug peddling, and other unlawful operations. He emphasized that these activities not only pose a significant threat to the state’s security but also perpetuate social vices that undermine community well-being and the dignity of those involved.

Governor Zulum stated that the settlement, which accommodates criminals and minor girls for commercial sex work, will be demolished within 72 hours, while the illegal brothels are required to vacate within 12 hours.

“The government has been duly informed of the activities that are going on here. This settlement is entirely illegal, and it serves as a breeding space for insurgents. Therefore, I have directed that everybody should vacate the place,” Zulum declared.

In addition to the demolition orders, Governor Zulum announced the revocation of the land title previously allocated for use by the Nigerian Railway Corporation. He revealed that the land had been unlawfully leased for various criminal activities.

“I understand that this land was approved by the Borno State Government for use by the Nigerian Railway Corporation, but regrettably, it has been rented out illegally, with all forms of criminal activities taking place,” Zulum explained. “For this reason, the government has revoked the earlier approval, and henceforth, the land belongs to the Borno State Government.”

This decisive action by Governor Zulum aims to eradicate criminal activities in the area and promote a safer and more secure environment for the residents of Maiduguri.
