The Yobe State Government is set to introduce an Emergency Medical Ambulance Service, EMAS, to provide prompt and efficient emergency medical response.
This was disclosed by the Chairman of the EMAS Committee and Chief Medical Director, Yobe State Teaching Hospital, Dr Babawaru Goni.
Mr Goni, who disclosed this on Friday at an EMAS stakeholders’ meeting in Damaturu, highlighted the goal of the scheme as mitigating morbidity and mortality rate amongst the people.
“When the scheme commences, it will provide prompt and efficient emergency medical services to citizens, eliminate delays in access to healthcare, reduce mortality, severe morbidity and save lives.
“It will provide professionally coordinated transport of patients or disaster victims from the incident site to the emergency room of the receiving hospital, for definitive care.

“The scheme will provide emergency medical care and life support for sustained stability of patients on transit to the hospital,’’ Mr Goni said.
Dr Muhammed Gana, Yobe Commissioner for Health and Human Services, explained that the scheme would, at inception, cover trauma, medical, paediatrics, assault, obstetrics and gynaecology emergencies as well as drugs and poisoning emergencies.
Mr Gana also said some of the referral centres include, the Yobe State Teaching Hospital, Yobe State Specialists’ Hospital, Family Support Hospital, Damaturu and Specialists’ Hospital Potiskum.
The commissioner expressed appreciation to the EMAS committee for coming up with a robust plan for the scheme within a short time, and commended Gov. Mai Mala Buni for his achievements in the health sector.
“I am very happy, with lots of commendations and appreciation to Gov Mai Mala Buni, as he approved and provided nine ambulances for the take-off of this scheme,’’ he said.
