A Dei-Dei Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Tuesday, sentenced a 22-year-old trader, Marnsir Abdullahi, to three months in the correctional centre for stealing an iron rim.
Abdullahi of Zone 3, Dutse Alhaji, Abuja, had pleaded guilty to a count charge of theft and begged the court for leniency.
The Judge, Malam Saminu Suleiman, however, gave the convict an option of N10,000 fine.
Suleiman advised the convict to be of good behaviour and desist from life of crime or otherwise face more severe sanctions if arrested again.
He said the punishment would have been stiffer if the convict had not saved the court the rigour of protracted prosecution.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Mr Olanipekun Babajide told the court that the security guard of Olajumoke Shopping Complex, Dutse Alhaji, Abuja, arrested the convict and brought him to Dutse Alhaji police station on Aug.1.
Babajide said that at about 8: p.m., the convict smartly trespassed into the shopping complex and stole iron rim, the value of which was yet to be ascertained.
The prosecutor said that during police investigation, the convict confessed that he stole the iron rim with the intention of selling it.
Babajide said the offence contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code.
