The Zamfara House of Assembly has started the process of impeaching the state’s Deputy Governor, Alhaji Mahadi Aliyu.

Malam Mustafa Jafaru-Kaura, the Director-General of Press Affairs and Public Relations to the legislature, delivered a statement in Gusau on Friday.

The move came after the Deputy Speaker of the House, Mr. Nasiru Magarya, presented an impeachment notice, according to the statement.

“Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria authorizes legislatures to initiate impeachment proceedings against a governor or his deputy on charges of constitutional violations, misconduct, or abuse of authority.”
“As a result, today the Deputy Speaker and Chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts presented a formal request notifying the Speaker of the House of the House’s intent to impeach Barr. Mahdi Aliyu Muhammad Gusau as the state’s Deputy Governor,” Jafaru-Kaura said.
“The Deputy Speaker accused the Deputy Governor, Mahdi Aliyu-Gusau, of alleged constitutional violations, abuse of office, and financial misappropriation, all of which are impeachable offenses, and added that Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution empowered them to immediately begin the impeachment process against the Deputy Governor.”

The Speaker responded by promising that the assembly would investigate the charges against the deputy governor and act appropriately in accordance with the constitution’s provisions.
