Sylvia Bongo, wife of Gabon’s deposed president jailed
Sylvia Bongo Ondimba, the wife of Gabon’s ousted president Ali Bongo Ondimba, who had been under house arrest following the recent coup in late August, has now been incarcerated.
Her legal counsel, Francois Zimeray, has decried the incarceration as an “arbitrary and illegal procedure.”
Sylvia Bongo Ondimba Valentin faces charges of embezzlement of public funds, money laundering, forgery, and falsification of records.
The military junta responsible for the coup alleges that the former head of state and his associates manipulated election results.
They have openly accused Sylvia Bongo Ondimba of influencing her husband since his debilitating stroke in 2018.
