As part of an endeavor to deepen the game of football in Nigeria, Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo has urged Bayern Munich FC of Germany to explore establishing an academy in Anambra.

On Saturday, Soludo made the request when greeting the Bayern Munich technical staff to the state for the National Youth Cup.

The governor, speaking through Tony Oli, chairman of the Anambra Sports Development Commission, expressed his gratitude to the state for providing a good football facility, which qualified the state to host the event.

He declared Anambra to be the home of football and promised to create an enabling environment for a successful tournament, expressing hope that youths from the state would be among the final 10 players chosen for development.

In his words, “Anambra has a rich history in football, we have the talent and we have the facility, so we are calling on Bayern Munich to consider establishing an academy here in Anambra, because we will like to continue to have you.

“Just tell us what will be required and we will put them on ground.”

Obinna Edeh, the founder of VOE Foundation and a representative partner of Bayern Munich in Nigeria, said the tournament attracted 100 young talents aged 15-16 from ten football teams around the country.

Edeh stated that ten of the event’s winners will be flown abroad in October of this year, where they would be groomed by the Bundesliga club and mentored to greatness.

Edeh praised the Aspire Foundation for assisting with logistics, which allowed the event to take place in Anambra.

The Bayern Youth Cup cooperation, according to Emeka Okeke, Chairman of the Aspire Foundation Board of Trustees, is part of the My Anambra Football Project, which has a wide strategy to improve football in Anambra.

The organization had previously organized the Anambra Super Eight Tournament and capacity building for coaches in the state, according to Okeke, who was represented by Toochukwu Onwubuche, Director Programme Development and Implementation of the foundation.

He expressed optimism that the scouting exercise would have a beneficial impact on coaches and players, as well as that the exposure would help Anambra’s young talents reach the top of their profession.

Hans Pflugler, a retired Germany footballer and member of the 1990 World Cup-winning team, leads the Bayern Youth Cup technical team.
