Russian Election Commission Approves Presidential Election in Occupied Ukrainian Regions

In a significant development, Russia’s Central Election Commission (CEC) has given its approval for the upcoming presidential election to be conducted in partially occupied regions of Ukraine.

Interfax, a Russian news agency, reported this on Monday, revealing that both Russia’s Armed Forces and the Federal Security Service believe the voting process can proceed in conflict-ridden areas.

This announcement comes as Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine approaches its two-year anniversary.

According to Russian law, the CEC is empowered to hold elections in regions under martial law, but only after consulting with the Defence Ministry and the FSB, as per Moscow Times reports.

The Kremlin has previously declared the annexation of several Ukrainian regions, including Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson.

“Not only is the electoral system of the four [occupied regions]… in working order, but it’s highly professional,” emphasized deputy CEC chairman Nikolai Bulayev.

President Vladimir Putin has announced his intention to seek a fifth term in office, and the prevailing political landscape in Russia suggests a likely victory for him. The presidential election is scheduled to take place from March 15 to 17 next year.

This decision by the CEC adds a layer of complexity to the ongoing geopolitical situation, raising concerns and garnering international attention as it unfolds amidst the enduring conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
