The Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), has urged producers to use bee extracts such as propolis, royal jelly, and bee venom to improve food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics manufacturing.

Prof. Ibrahim Hussaini Doko, Director-General of the RMRDC, provided this suggestion at the council’s sensitization session in Lagos on Wednesday.

Dr. Anthony Negedu, Director, Agriculture and Agro-Allied Department, RMRDC, who represented Doko, said that urgent efforts were needed in Nigeria to harness the health advantages of bee extracts.

He said that the use of bee products in traditional and modern medicine has proven to be highly effective in promoting good health and reducing chronic disease.

He mentioned that propolis’ antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-cellular, and anti-cancer characteristics made it useful in treating a variety of ailments.

Doko went on to say that using these extracts will benefit the manufacturing sector, as well as save money on imports and the country’s vital foreign exchange, thereby improving the Nigerian economy.

He stated that the federal government was dedicated to the project’s success in terms of regulation and certification, as well as any necessary funding.

In his words, “Royal jelly is widely used to help combat various chronic health conditions and many pharmacological activities such as antibacterial anti-tumor, anti-allergy, anti-inflammatory effect have also been attributed to it.

“The RMRDC is the leading agency for bee hive products sensitisation nationwide and the knowledge to be offloaded to the relevant sectorial stakeholders for products development.

“In view of the potency of the extracts against fungi, bacterial and virus diseases and honey acceptability in pharmaceuticals products formulations, this conference will be accepted as cure for COVID-19 is on the front burner globally.

“The council is sensitising the pharmaceuticals, cosmetic and food sub-sectors of MAN on the importance and the huge potential of investing and utilising these products.

“This import substitution will save the country a lot of finance, create jobs and serve as an avenue for national economy development.”
