Renewed Hope Initiative Empowers Widows, Orphans of Fallen Heroes

In a compassionate move aimed at ameliorating the challenges faced by the widows and orphans of fallen heroes in the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), an initiative of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has disbursed a total sum of 427.75 million Naira to 1,709 beneficiaries.

This is contained in a statement by Busola Kukoyi, SA Media to the First Lady, on Tuesday.

According to the statement, the financial support, amounting to 250,000 Naira each, was presented to the widows and orphans in a ceremony attended by the First Lady herself.

The beneficiaries, drawn from various associations including the Nigeria Army Officers Wives Association (NAOWA), the Nigerian Navy Officers Wives Association (NOWA), the Nigerian Air Force Officers Wives Association (NAFOWA), the Police Officers Wives Association (POWA), and the Defence Officers Wives Association (DEPOWA), received the relief package as part of the social investment program of the RHI.

Senator Oluremi Tinubu, addressing the recipients, acknowledged the challenging path that the wives and families of gallant soldiers navigate daily, filled with uncertainties. She stressed the need to recognize and reward the sacrifices made by the fallen heroes in defence of the country with adequate welfare for their dependents.

“As wives of gallant soldiers, your path is not an easy one, filled with uncertainties. The sacrifices of your breadwinners who have paid the ultimate price in the defense of the country must be rewarded with provision of adequate welfare,” the First Lady declared.

The financial support, totalling 427.75 million Naira, is earmarked to empower the widows, enabling them to recapitalize existing businesses or start new ventures for the well-being of their families. Senator Tinubu emphasized that widows are not victims but survivors, showcasing extraordinary courage in the face of adversity.

“We recognize that widows are not victims; they are survivors. You have shown extraordinary courage in the face of adversity, and we are here to offer a helping hand as you chart a new path forward,” she expressed.

Senator Tinubu also called on other stakeholders to consider the dependents of fallen soldiers, urging collective efforts in supporting these families who have lost their breadwinners in service to the nation.

In a goodwill message, Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, commended the First Lady and the RHI for the thoughtful gesture, emphasizing the prioritization of the welfare of widows.

Represented by Major-General Danladi Salisu, the Chief of Defence Staff noted that the financial support would bring renewed hope to the families of fallen heroes and boost the morale of serving members of the Armed Forces.

President of Defence and Police Officers Wives Association, Oghogho Musa, who received the donation on behalf of the beneficiaries, expressed gratitude for the intervention. She described it as a much-needed relief for the widows and orphans, acknowledging the impact it would have on their lives.

The event concluded with hopes that the financial support provided by the Renewed Hope Initiative would serve as a catalyst for positive change in the lives of the widows and orphans of fallen heroes, offering them a renewed sense of hope and empowerment.
