Refuse Evacuation: Kaduna engages 13 disposal firms

The Kaduna Capital Territory Authority (KCTA) says it has engaged the services of 13 firms to handle refuse evacuation in the state.

Dr Haira’u Umar, Assistant Director, Municipal Waste Management, KCTA, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Kaduna.

He said that the volume of waste generation in the state was huge, following its population density and land mass.

“Before the authority was established, evacuation of waste was done by only one company. This move is to ensure efficiency,” he said.

The assistant director said that the 13 companies were engaged to handle refuse collections across the three metropolitan cities of Kaduna, Zaria, and Kafanchan.

Umar further said that the agency’s proactive environmental sensitisation programmes had positively affected the sanitary habits of the residents.

“The result of this is that the state only experienced flash flooding during the year,” he said.

We shall soon commence door-to-door waste collection through the Polluter Pay Principle. This policy will soon begin in all the metropolitan cities,” he said.

He said the state government had shown enormous commitment towards the dredging of rivers and clearing of water channels to ensure the free flow of rainwater.

“The dredging of rivers around flood-prone communities will be a continuous process in order to avert flooding in the state,” he said.
