President Buhari reportedly sacks CBN Governor

228

An unconfirmed report has revealed that President Muhammadu  Buhari has sacked the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.

Godwin Emefiele has been embroiled in controversy since declaring interest in becoming Nigeria’s next president and refusing to resign before running.

Emefiele approached a Federal High Court in Abuja to prevent the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) from rejecting him following public outcry asking for his resignation shortly after acquiring the All Progressives Congress (APC) N100m form.

In reaction to his appointees’ expressions of interest in running for political offices in 2023, President Buhari ordered the resignation of all of his cabinet members with such interest.

While some of his appointees complied with the order, others, including the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, did not.

The CBN governor dropped his lawsuit against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Attorney-General of the Federation over his presidential ambition on Tuesday.

His exact reasons for abandoning the complaint are unknown; nevertheless, his lawyers stated that he asked the court to dismiss the case and issue an order striking it out.

In the early hours of Wednesday, rumors circulated that he had been fired by the federal government.
