Police Nab 18 Suspected IPOB Members in Connection with Officer Killings

In a significant development, the Imo State Police Command has made arrests in connection with the killing of two officers at Ahiara Junction in Ahiazu-Mbaise Local Government Area of the state. The 18 suspects apprehended are believed to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

According to a report by The PUNCH Online, the officers fell victim to an attack by individuals dressed in military camouflage while they stopped to refuel their vehicles on Monday. The suspects, armed and arriving in three vehicles, launched a sudden and intense assault on the officers, firing shots indiscriminately.

Henry Okoye, the spokesperson for the police command, identified the deceased officers as the divisional police officer of Ahiazu-Mbaise and an inspector. Okoye stated, “The police operatives fought gallantly, but unfortunately, the DPO and an inspector of police paid the supreme price in the gun duel that ensued, while two police officers survived the attack.”

In response to the incident, police operatives, led by CP Aboki Danjuma, swiftly initiated a confidence-building patrol in Ahaizu Mbaise. The pursuit led to a hot chase, forcing the assailants to flee with gunshot injuries, leaving behind some operational motorcycles.

Reinforcements were promptly provided by the military, led by the Brigade Commander, 34 Artillery Brigade Obinze, and an intense combing of the area is currently underway. Okoye disclosed, “Meanwhile, a total of 18 suspects have been arrested and are currently undergoing investigation.”

The arrests highlight the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies in responding to security threats, and the ongoing investigation will shed light on the circumstances surrounding the attack on the police officers. The incident underscores the challenges faced by security personnel in maintaining law and order, particularly in regions where tensions are heightened.

Kevin Aligbe, Commander Training and Doctrine Command, Nigerian Army, says failure will not be tolerated among officers in the rank of captain at the practical promotion exams in the country. Aligbe, who was the examination president, made this known on Monday in Akure during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Captain to Major Practical Promotion Examination (CMPPE). The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that over 200 captains were drawn from different formations and units for the exercise across the country. Hence, it is presumed that you all had enough time to prepare for the examination. “Therefore, there should be no excuse for failure, and I expect nothing short of 100 per cent pass in this examination,” he said. In his welcome address, Maj. Gen. Obinna Onubogu, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Div., appreciated the NA headquarters for finding the division worthy to host the 2024 CMPPE. Therefore, you are adviced to be security conscious and be cautious of where you go. “The disclosure of information on movement of participants and other actions that could compromise the security of personnel should be avoided,” he said.
