Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, has resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

In a letter dated May 24 and delivered to Senator Iyorchia Ayu, the main opposition party’s National Chairman, Peter Obi announced his departure from the party.

In addition to resigning from the PDP, the presidential candidate announced that he would withdraw from the race for the party’s primary election – just three days before the election.

He added that he decided to leave the party because he is adamant about rescuing Nigeria, regardless of the way.

Peter Obi acknowledged that it was an honor to contribute to nation-building efforts through the PDP, but he expressed regret that recent changes inside the party had made it nearly impossible for him to continue participating and making such positive contributions.

According to him, the country’s problems are deep-seated and would necessitate significant sacrifices in order to save it.

The presidential hopeful notified the PDP chairman that he has since informed the Chairman of Agulu Ward 2, his ward in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, of his resignation and withdrawal from the primary.

Peter Obi was one of the leading presidential aspirants of the PDP alongside former vice president Atiku Abubakar, former Senate president Bukola Saraki, Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and Sokoto State governor Aminu Tambuwal.

Director-General, Peter Obi Campaign Organisation Doyin Okupe insisted that the former Anambra State governor will be on the ballot for the 2023 presidential election.

It would be recalled that the former governor was a running mate to fellow presidential aspirant Atiku Abubakar in the 2019 general elections.
