Pandemonium at Rivers Assembly as lawmakers attempt to impeach governor

The Rivers State House of Assembly Complex was thrown into turmoil on Monday as gunshots rang out and teargas filled the air. This unsettling scene unfolded as certain lawmakers gathered to initiate impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Approximately 23 lawmakers, with Speaker Martin Amaewhule presiding, came to a unanimous decision to initiate the impeachment process. In a bold move, they also suspended Edison Ehie, the House leader, and a number of their fellow lawmakers believed to be aligned with the governor.

This tense situation follows a previous explosion that occurred at the assembly complex on Sunday night, resulting in a devastating fire in the chamber.

Shortly after the proceedings, lawmakers were observed leaving the Assembly around 8:15 a.m., accompanied by a heavy security presence.

The sudden eruption of gunfire and deployment of teargas led to pandemonium, with people fleeing in all directions. Police officers pursued individuals, including office workers situated nearby, adding to the general chaos.
