The Federal Government of Nigeria has revealed that the National Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos, which is now undergoing renovations, will be renamed Lagos Creative and Entertainment Center once completed.
Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture, said this on Tuesday in Madrid, Spain, while signing an agreement to host the inaugural Global Conference on Cultural Tourism and Creative Industry in Nigeria.
It was gathered that the bilateral agreement was signed at the headquarters of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
The global conference, which will take place from November 14 to November 17, will be the first event to be held at the freshly renovated structure, according to Mohammed.
In his words, “Nigeria will be hosting the event at the National Theatre in Lagos, which is currently being renovated at a cost of 100 million dollars under a partnership between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Bankers’ Committee/Central Bank of Nigeria.
“It is the first of such renovation of the iconic edifice in over four decades.
“In addition to the renovation, new hubs are being constructed, within the premises of the National theatre, for fashion, Information, technology, film and music.
“With that, the National Theatre is now known as the Lagos Creative and Entertainment Centre.

The signing of the bilateral agreement, according to Mohammed, indicated Nigeria’s commitment to hosting the event.
As a result, he instructed the contractors in charge of the reconstruction project to guarantee that it was completed in time for the worldwide event.
In order to ensure that the facility is ready for the hosting in November, the minister said he recently went on a tour of current work there with stakeholders.
The Lagos Governor, Babajide Sanwoolu; the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele; and the Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Sunday Dare were among the stakeholders on the inspection tour, according to the minister.
According to the minister, all signs pointed to the venue being ready in time to host the global summit.
Mr Ademola Seriki, Nigeria’s ambassador to Spain, stated the building would be completed before the world event. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the business in charge of the reconstruction project.
Seriki, who accompanied the minister to the signing of the bilateral agreement, expressed gratitude to the UNWTO for allowing Nigeria to host the first global conference.
He said that the conference would boost Nigeria’s international profile and demonstrate the country’s leadership in music, theater, and other forms of entertainment in Africa.
