Nigeria Slips to 40th Place in Latest FIFA Rankings

In the most recent FIFA men’s rankings for June, Nigeria has dropped to the 40th position, losing three points despite a convincing win in their last 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers match.

Previously ranked 39th in the June rankings, the Super Eagles’ impressive performance in the AFCON qualifiers did not yield a positive impact on their global ranking.

Nigeria’s national football team, the Eagles, secured a resounding 6-0 victory against Sao Tome and Principe in their final AFCON qualifiers match, amassing 15 points to clinch the top spot in Group A.

This achievement ensures their participation in the upcoming AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast, and their position in the top six on the African continent, making them top seeds for the AFCON draw scheduled later in 2023.

Meanwhile, Morocco maintains its position as Africa’s leading nation, ranked 13th globally. Despite slipping two places to 20th in the world rankings, Senegal continues to hold the second spot in Africa.

Tunisia is the only African country among the top six on the continent to make a global gain, moving up from 31st to 29th place in the world rankings. Completing the top five in Africa are Algeria at 34th and Egypt at 35th.

On a global scale, Argentina, the reigning World Cup champions, retain their status as the top-ranked nation, followed by France, Brazil, England, and Belgium.
