The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) disclosed that it has developed a ten-year strategic plan from 2020 to 2030 that will serve as a roadmap for attaining the scheme’s objective.
Prof. Mohammed Sambo, the scheme’s Executive Secretary, made the disclosure at a news conference in Abuja on Tuesday.
In his words, “The scheme has developed a ten-year strategic plan from 2020 to 2230 which serves as a road map for achieving its mandate.
“The implementation of the plan has commenced with efforts aimed at the attainment of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in Nigeria, with a clear focus and milestones that could easily and accurately be tracked.”
According to him, there have been no reports of financial violations in the scheme throughout the country.
Sambo stated that when he resumed office in July 2019, he unveiled a three-point rebranding programme to enable him to reform and refocus the scheme on its core goal.
Part of the reforms, he added, included reinstalling a valve system that would turn the scheme into a credible, results-oriented organization.

Others, he claimed, were promoting transparency and accountability throughout the scheme’s operation.
In order to address persisting flaws in the scheme, Sambo said it hired competent medical personnel, which were in limited supply, particularly in state offices.
According to him, the program also focused on proactive and strategic capacity building for employees.
Sambo went on to say that the plan now has a solid financial management mechanism in place.
According to him, the strategy addressed a number of reported operational flaws, including delays in payments to HMOs and providers, as well as denial of service to participants.
Other deficiencies rectified, he added, were delays in HMO and HealthCare Partners (HCP) accreditation and poor knowledge of participants’ rights and obligations.
