NDLEA Destroys Over 15.7 Tonnes of Seized Narcotics in Kano

In a bid to combat the scourge of drug abuse and trafficking, the Kano State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has successfully destroyed more than 15.7 tonnes of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances confiscated over the past three years.

The revelation came from the command’s Public Relations Officer, Sadiq Maigatari, in a statement released on Monday. The destruction operation spanned from October 8, 2020, to October 17, 2023, and targeted substances such as cannabis sativa, cocaine, psychotropic substances, methamphetamine, barbiturates, and various expired drugs.

Maigatari emphasized the commitment of the agency to eliminating illicit drugs from every corner of the state. He highlighted the establishment of Divisional Narcotic Offices in every local government, a move approved by the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa Rtd.

“The substances that were burnt during the destruction exercise weighed over 15.7 tonnes including cannabis sativa, cocaine, psychotropic substances, methamphetamine, barbiturate, and other assorted expired drugs,” stated Maigatari.

The NDLEA called for support from local and state governments to achieve a drug-free society, reaffirming its dedication to eradicating the menace of drug abuse. The agency commended the collaboration of various stakeholders, including security agencies, the Kano State Government, and traditional leaders, in the ongoing fight against drug abuse in Kano.

The proactive efforts of the NDLEA in destroying seized narcotics underscore the agency’s determination to curb the proliferation of illicit substances and promote a safer and healthier community.
