Messi’s Historic 2022 World Cup Jerseys to Hit Sotheby’s Auction Block

Sotheby’s has revealed that a collection of six jerseys worn by Lionel Messi during Argentina’s triumphant 2022 World Cup campaign will be up for auction in December, with an estimated value of $10 million.

Messi showcased these jerseys in the initial halves of the group-stage clashes against Saudi Arabia and Mexico, as well as subsequent matches versus Australia, the Netherlands, Croatia, and the final against France.

This victory in Qatar marked a significant achievement for Messi, as it concluded his pursuit of the championship after falling short in four previous World Cups.

If the jerseys indeed surpass the $10 million estimate, the auction could set a record as the most valuable assortment of sports memorabilia ever auctioned, as stated by Sotheby’s.

For context, the highest-priced individual jersey ever auctioned was one worn by basketball legend Michael Jordan during his NBA finals run with the Chicago Bulls in 1998, which fetched $10.1 million last year. The increasing recognition of sports memorabilia as a burgeoning market has been noted by auction houses in recent years.

The jerseys are being presented for auction by AC Momento, a US tech startup that aids athletes in managing their memorabilia collections. A noteworthy aspect of this auction is that a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the UNICAS Project, an initiative associated with a Barcelona children’s hospital that supports children with rare diseases.

To provide enthusiasts and the public with an opportunity to view these iconic jerseys, they will be on display for free from November 30 to December 14 when the auction takes place.
