Manchester City regained their six-point lead at the top of the Premier League with a 4-1 derby victory against Manchester United, thanks to goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez.

Five minutes into the 187th Manchester derby, De Bruyne scored his 50th Premier League goal, giving City the perfect start.

In the absence of the injured Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho gave a small reprieve for United with a well-taken equalize midway through the first half, but De Bruyne’s second ensured City lead – justifiably – at the break.

Mahrez superbly volleyed in City’s third from a corner 22 minutes from time to seal the statement victory, and amid wild celebrations, the Algerian underlined Pep Guardiola’s side’s dominance with a late, VAR-awarded fourth.

City’s win sees them respond to Liverpool’s title challenge by reclaiming their six-point lead at the top of the Premier League, while United’s first defeat since January 3 – and second league defeat under Ralf Rangnick – leaves them in fifth place, a point behind fourth-placed Arsenal despite having played three more games.
