Man bags 6 months community service for cheating

A Magistrates’ Court, Kubwa, Abuja, on Tuesday sentenced a 47-year-old man, Istifanus John, to six months of community service for cheating.

John, who was convicted and sentenced for criminal breach of trust, misappropriation and cheating, begged the court for mercy.

The Magistrate, Nneaka Lesley, sentenced John to community service within the court’s premises and ordered him to pay N509,000 compensation to the complainant, Tony Ugwu.

She, however, warned him to desist from committing crimes and be of good behaviour.

Earlier, the prosecuting counsel, John Okpa, told the court that the complainant entrusted John with N1,180,000 to fix 20 aluminium windows for him in his property at Chikakore, Abuja, on March 22.

Okpa said John fixed six windows instead, abandoned the work and fled to his village in Kaduna state after misappropriating N509,000 and converted same to his use.

The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of Sections 312, 322 and 309 of the Penal Code.
