As the crisis afflicting Nigeria’s National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the state continues, the Lagos State government announced late Thursday night that the union’s operations in the state had been suspended.

The government stated in a statement that it has a duty to ensure the safety of all Lagosians and visitors’ lives and property, and that there is an urgent need to dispel the unnecessary tension generated by the leadership squabble in the NURTW and protect the citizenry from the likely fallout of the situation.
“Following careful consideration of the provisions of the law, the Government hereby suspends the activities of NURTW, which must cease operations in all parks and garages throughout Lagos State.” The government will form a committee to take control of the parks and garages right away. Members of the committee will be key stakeholders in the sector,” said Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy.

“The Government’s position is based on its responsibility to ensure that there is no breakdown in law and order in all parks and garages in Lagos State,” he says.
