The Independent National Electoral Commission has declared the candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Yusuf Kabir as governor-elect of Kano State, ending the contest between Gov Abdullahi Ganduje and Rabiu Kwankwaso for political control of the state.

Kabir was declared the winner of the keenly contested March 18 poll on Monday morning having scored 1,019,602 votes to defeat his closest contender, Nasir Gawuna of the APC who polled 890,705 votes.

Declaring the result, the Returning Officer, Prof Ahmad Ibrahim said: “That Yusuf Kabir of NNPP having satisfied the requirement of the law is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected.”

Kabir was backed by former Kano governor and NNPP presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso while Gawuna was also endorsed by the incumbent governor and APC powerbroker, Abdullahi Ganduje.

Ganduje and Kwankwaso have been bitter political opponents for years, fighting for control of the state that is unquestionably the most populous in Nigeria and has the largest voter turnout in the country.
