Kogi lawyers call for improved welfare for judicial officers

Concerned Lawyers in Kogi on Thursday solicited for improved and better welfare for judicial officers in the country.

Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) John Adele made the appeal during a special valedictory court session held in honour of the late retired Justice Rakiya Okpanachi, who died on Dec. 30, 2022.

Alede, in his goodwill message on behalf of SANs, described the condition under which judges worked as “very excruciating” and suffocating, deserving better improvement.

“It’s unfortunate that judicial officers don’t talk, but could talk only through their judgments, even when their welfare is nothing to write home about.

“They work where the rooms are very hot because there are no air conditioners.

“Worse still, they go back home to write their judgments under the same excruciating environment.

“I don’t want to sound too hard, but I resist the temptation of telling the truth, we took an oath to assist the cause of justice and speak on behalf of the judiciary.

“I hereby appealed to those who have the authority to do what is needed to be done to ensure that no judicial officer, after his/her retirement, go cap in hand looking for what to eat, ” he said.

Earlier, the state Attorney General, Mr Ibrahim Mohammed, said that the late Rakiya had made her mark in the judiciary by being the first woman Attorney General of Kogi. (NAN)
