Kano Mass Wedding: Hisbah Discovers Health Issues Among Couples-to-Be

In preparation for a state-sponsored mass wedding in Kano, the Hisbah Board has revealed the presence of health conditions among the prospective couples. These conditions include HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B, and early pregnancies.

According to Hisbah’s spokesperson, Lawan Ibrahim Fagge, a significant number of individuals discovered their health status for the first time during the mandatory medical tests. Fagge stated, “The majority of those found with the conditions came to realize their status for the first time after they were subjected to medical tests.”

Barrister Abba Sufi, the Director General of the Board, announced plans to introduce legislation mandating pre-marital screenings to assess the health status of couples. He explained that the proposed laws would provide guidance to individuals with diseases like HIV and other conditions, advising them appropriately, and promptly initiating medication for those with treatable ailments.

Sufi emphasized the importance of pre-marital screening, stating, “The discovery has proven the importance of pre-marital screening, and this has made it important for us not to take things for granted. For instance, what we discovered during the screening is because we mandated it. Only God knows the number of children that are going to be born as sickle cell patients, and so many diseases will also be transmitted among people.”

Sufi also noted that in Islam, it is forbidden (haram) for pregnant women to marry. He mentioned that the board has already completed the screening of 1,600 individuals from all 44 LGAs of the state.
