The Kano State Government has established an ad hoc committee to educate tertiary students about the impacts and risks of drug abuse and other mental health conditions.

This information was revealed by the Special Adviser on Health Matters, Dr Fauziyya Buba, on Friday after a one-day sensitization conference with mentors in guidance and counselling from the state’s higher institutions.

The meeting was called, according to Buba, who also serves as chair of the state Mental Health Action Committee and the Female Anti-Drug Campaign Committee, to evaluate the proposals made at the previous gathering.

She said that at the first meeting with the guidance and counselling mentors, action points were given to them based on the listed activities, which resulted in the creation of guidance and counselling clubs throughout the state’s tertiary schools as well as an anti-drug abuse unit.

The Special Adviser highlighted that an ad hoc committee was formed during the conference to tour tertiary institutions and educate lecturers, staff, and students about their mental health, the repercussions of drug abuse, as well as social and spiritual well-being.

She emphasized that the group would begin its work at the end of November and urged tertiary institution administration, lecturers, other staff, and students to work with the committee as closely as possible to help it be successful in its efforts to combat drug and alcohol abuse.
