Junta finally frees former Guinea President Conde

The junta that overthrew Guinea’s president, Alpha Conde, has announced that he is “finally free” and can receive guests.

Conde became Guinea’s first democratically elected president in 2010, but army commanders toppled him last year and replaced him with Colonel Mamady Doumbouya.

In January, he was granted permission to travel to the United Arab Emirates for medical treatment, and he returned to Guinea on April 10.

His party, the Rally of the Guinean People (RPG), has claimed that he was not genuinely free before or after his journey, and has requested that he be given “complete and absolute freedom.”

In protest of his detention, the RPG cancelled its participation in a national reconciliation meeting organized by the junta.

A statement released by the junta late Friday said that Doumbouya “informs national and international opinion that the former president of the republic is finally free.

“While continuing to benefit from adequate protection, he can receive on demand members of his biological and political family, friends, and close ones.”

According to the statement, Conde will stay at his wife’s home in the capital, Conakry, until his own private home is built in the Kipe district.

“The dignity and integrality of professor Alpha Conde will always be preserved,” the statement added.

Conde’s successful attempt for a third term in power sparked violent protests, which detractors claimed violated the constitution.

Doumbouya, who has been inaugurated as interim president, has promised to restore civilian authority but has refused to commit to a time frame.
