Joe Biden to miss COP28 kick-off in Dubai

According to the official White House schedule, President Joe Biden will not be in attendance for the commencement of the UN Climate Change Conference, COP28 in Dubai later this week.

While the White House has not officially cited a reason for Biden’s absence from the annual global climate summit, senior officials suggested to The New York Times that the ongoing Gaza war is keeping the President occupied. Biden is actively involved in pushing for a prolonged pause in the conflict and the release of hostages held by Hamas.

U.S. climate envoy John Kerry, leading international negotiations for the Biden administration on the climate crisis, is expected to be present in Dubai.

The conference, known as COP28, will bring together representatives from approximately 200 countries for a two-week session starting Thursday in the United Arab Emirates.

Biden, who attended the last two summits in Scotland and Egypt, recently characterized the climate crisis as the “ultimate threat to humanity.”

The COP28 agenda includes discussions on a new target for the expansion of renewable energies, a financial fund for damages and losses, and an official assessment of whether the world is on track to address the climate crisis.
