The President, Defence and Police Officers Wives Association (DEPOWA), Mrs Victoria Irabor, on Thursday inaugurated an ultramodern secretariat complex for the Defence Intelligence Agency Officers Wives Association (DIAOWA) in Abuja.

Mrs Irabor also unveiled the uniform for the DIAOWA to showcase the association’s corporate identity.

In her remarks, she commended the foresightedness of the Coordinator of DIAOWA, Mrs Adesuwa Adebayo, in ensuring that the association has a physical structure, saying that it would contribute to DEPOWA’s goals and objectives.

According to her, DIAOWA has over the years been a pillar of great support, contributing to the success of DEPOWA as a noble organisation with its members across the globe.

“Provision of a physical structure will be vital to the success of the association as it embodies a location for administrative action, member affiliation and a focal point for community support and development.

“I especially urge all members of DIAOWA to embody the dedication shown by the coordinator in delivering their duty and building the bond of sisterhood.

“You know what that means for us as wives of military officers as there is no ‘I in team’.

“Therefore, remember, uniting your voices will always produce good and commendable work,” she said.

DEPOWA President also commended the Chief of Defense Intelligence, Maj.-Gen. Samuel Adebayo, for his continued support to DIAOWA and by extension DEPOWA.

She urged DIAOWA to continue to build networks and progressive relationships with relevant stakeholders to further develop and enhance capacity building for our women, children and community.

She also reiterated DEPOWA’s support for DIAOWA’s activities.
The Minister of Women Affairs, Dame Pauline Tallen, said the new secretariat would assist DIAOWA members to provide support and stability to their husbands in the discharge of their duties.

Tallen, who was represented by the ministry’s Director of Human Resources Management, Mrs Olufunke Osunkoya, urged the women to continue to build a vibrant association that would uphold the well being of its members.

She said the ministry as national machinery for the advancement of women, children and other vulnerable persons in the society would continue to support associations such as DIAOWA to ensure that every Nigerian woman was able to contribute maximally to national development.

The minister urged officers wives to key into the activities of the ministry as it joined the global community in the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence.

“I, therefore, seize this opportunity to invite all the women groups led by DEPOWA and other sister agencies to join us in the campaign and also organise related activities around the barracks and schools.

”I want to reassure DIAOWA of the ministries unwavering readiness to support its activities.

“I am hopeful that this association will venture into providing daycare facilities not only for its members but also for a young female nursing officer to enable their husbands to concentrate on their duties,” she said.

The DIAOWA Coordinator said the inauguration of the secretariat and DIAOWA uniform marked a milestone in the making of the association since it was established in September 2014.

Adebayo thanked her husband and DEPOWA for their support towards the actualisation of the projects.

According to her, this occasion will also be used to unveil the association’s uniform to formally signal its corporate identity.

“My sincere appreciation goes to all members of this association for your support and prayers,” she said. (NAN)
