Interior Minister Orders Probe into Alleged Complicity of Correctional Service Personnel in Terrorist Funding

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has issued a directive to the Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Haliru Nababa, instructing an investigation into allegations against service personnel.

The move comes in response to Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Chris Musa’s accusations that some correctional service personnel collaborated with inmates to finance terrorist operations.

Gen. Chris Musa, in a Tuesday appearance before the House of Representatives, revealed disturbing details about the connivance between correctional service personnel and inmates in the North East.

He stated, “They pass funds across. They use some of the warders there. We are not saying all of them are corrupt. They use their accounts, and the deal is that anyone whose account is used shares it 50/50. Those are the challenges.”

In a Thursday statement, the Minister of Interior, through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Alao Babatunde, expressed strong condemnation for the alleged unpatriotic acts of correctional service personnel. The minister pledged that any personnel found responsible would face legal consequences.

“The minister has called for a speedy investigation into the matter, noting that any officer culpable or complicit in sabotaging the Nigerian Correctional Facility, and by extension the security of the country, shall face the full wrath of the law,” the statement read.

Furthermore, the statement outlined ongoing actions to reform the correctional service to align with international standards. This reform aims to ensure that inmates are genuinely rehabilitated, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

“The era of talks but no action is over. The Renewed Hope administration will not entertain a breach from any officer. We have the interest of the state to protect, and it is above anyone’s interest,” the minister emphasized.
