Injury Blow for Super Eagles as Taiwo Awoniyi Faces Extended Spell on Sidelines

In a setback for the Super Eagles, star striker Taiwo Awoniyi is poised to miss the upcoming 2023 African Cup of Nations after undergoing surgery to address a groin injury sustained during the international break.

Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper confirmed the unfortunate news, expressing the extent of Awoniyi’s absence, stating, “It’s bad news on Taiwo; he’s had to have surgery, and he is going to be out for months.” Cooper emphasized the challenging nature of the recovery, adding, “We’ll support him and try to get him back as quick and as fit as he can be, but it’s a really unfortunate situation and a blow for him.”

Cooper acknowledged Awoniyi’s significance to the team, recognizing his contributions with four goals in 10 Premier League appearances this season. He lamented the striker’s misfortune, describing it as harsh given Awoniyi’s positive impact both on and off the field. “He’s become an important player for us with the goals he’s scored. He’s such a good guy and a good professional who is desperate to do well, so to get an injury like this is harsh on him. We’ve got to support him through the process of coming back stronger,” Cooper affirmed.

The 26-year-old striker played a pivotal role in the Eagles’ qualification for the tournament, showcasing his prowess with crucial goals. With the surgery-induced layoff, Awoniyi’s absence from the African showpiece, set to commence in January 2024 in Ivory Coast, is now certain, leaving a void in the Super Eagles’ attacking lineup.
