The Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria (IHVN) has appointed Dr Umaru Mutallab as Chairman of its Board of Directors to lead a strategic vision for health services and research in West Africa.

The IHVN Chief Executive Officer, Dr Patrick Dakum, made this known in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.

Dakum stated that Mutallab succeeded the late Prof. Emeritus, Umaru Shehu.

He added that Mutallab’s wealth of experience, after serving on many boards in the country, is vital in leading the institute to provide quality health services, capacity building and research in Nigeria and West Africa.

He stated that “the IHVN Board is a management board that approves all policies of the institute in line with national and global best practices.

“It guides the sourcing and efficient use of financial and non-financial resources, as well as directs internal and statutory audits.

“On the IHVN Board, there are accomplished professionals from diverse fields such as health, management, administration, communications and finance, who provide technical guidance to the institute.”

He said that with a distinguished career in banking, business, and government service, Mutallab brings a wealth of experience to lead IHVN’s efforts in providing quality health services.

Additionally, he said, Steve Omojafor has been selected as the Vice Chairman, who will also contribute his expertise in mass communication and social marketing to the organisation’s mission in combating infectious and non-infectious diseases.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mutalab, before his appointment, was a Board Director of the institute since 2011, a prominent business leader, a banker, a chartered and certified accountant, with many years of experience in development, commercial and merchant banking.

He is one of Nigeria’s bankers, former Minister for Economic Development in 1975 and of Cooperatives and Supplies in 1976, and served as a member of Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council from 1975 to 1978.

Mutallab was also a former Chairman of First Bank of Nigeria and Jaiz Bank International Plc, as well as a former Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, United Bank for Africa.

He holds the title of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), one of the highest honours in Nigeria.

A graduate of South-West London College and the Achimota College in Accra, Ghana, as well as Barewa College, Zaria, Mutallab was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree by Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife and Benue State University, Makurdi.
