Gombe Governor swears in new Chief Judge, pledges judiciary independence

By Matthew Eloyi­ – Gombe State Governor Inuwa Yahaya swore in Justice Joseph Awak as the state’s substantive Chief Judge on Friday.

Awak was considered worthy to serve the state in that position, according to Yahaya.

He claimed Awak was eligible since he had been acting Chief Judge since January 2, following the retirement of Justice Mu’azu Pindiga.

In his words, “Following the recommendation of the Judicial Service Commission on March 16, 2022, as required by the constitution, I approved the appointment of Justice Awak as the substantive head of the State High Court of Justice.

“The appointment was ratified by the honourable members of the Gombe State House of Assembly.”

According to the Governor,  Awak was appointed based on his many years of meritorious and selfless service.

“He is well known for his sterling qualities befitting of a top-ranking judicial officer,” he said.

The Governor expressed confidence that the incoming Chief Judge would carry out his duties with the same dedication and integrity that he had shown for the state’s benefit.

He urged him to establish an incorruptible judiciary that would administer justice to all citizens of the state without discrimination, fear, or favour.

According to him, rapid, sure, and impartial administration of justice is required to assist handle the nation’s numerous difficulties.

He promised to protect the state’s judiciary’s independence in order to ensure that justice is delivered quickly.
