Fourth batch of Nigerian evacuees from Ukraine arrives Abuja

The Federal Government of Nigeria has successfully evacuated another set of Nigerians fleeing the crisis in Ukraine.

The 306 Nigerians arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Sunday morning.

They were brought home via an Air Peace flight from Budapest, Hungary where they had crossed over for safety.

According to reports, this is the 4th batch of returnees in the on-going evacuation approved by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other agencies are presently attending to the returnees.

While welcoming the returnees on behalf of the Federal Government, Director-General of NEMA, Mustapha Habib Ahmed, informed them that President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the evacuation back home to safety and also provided a sum of USD$100 to be given to each of them in aid of their transportation to their various locations.

The DG NEMA who was represented by the Director Search and Rescue Air Commodore Edward Adedokun, further informed the returnees that arrangement has also been made for a night’s accommodation for them to rest before continuing to their homes.

However, those whose relatives had come to pick them up were free to go.

 Police advise against early report of conflict, community disorder in Ogun

Police rescue 14 passengers from bandits in Jibia

Police Command in Ogun has called on residents of communities in the state to stop early report of conflicts to prevent incessant clashes and community disorder.

The command’s Spokesperson, CSP Omolola Odutola, who gave the advice in a statement in Abeokuta on Wednesday, stated that the call became necessary in order to ensure serenity in the communities.

“The advice followed the directive by the Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr Lanre Ogunlowo, as a result of disputes between farmers and herders in Olugbo and adjoining village in the state.

“He ordered an organisation of stakeholders’ meeting for peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders in the communities,

“The CP strongly condemn incessant cases of crop destruction and cattle killings arising from disputes between farmers and herders in the community” Odutola said

According to her, in a swift reaction, the police command, through its Odeda Division, convened Security Consultation/Stakeholders’ Meeting on Tuesday to prevent further break down of law and order.

“Other key resolutions reached included peace and tolerance among all ethnic groups to embrace peace and tolerate one another.

“There is need for compulsory collaboration with the police to enhance commitment to swift intervention in any emerging disputes to prevent violence.

“The police command remains committed to peace through full cooperation to maintain peace and security in the region,” she said.

Council approves appointment of Prof Adamu Ahmed as new ABU VC

ABU awards scholarships to 107 students

The Governing Council of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) has approved the appointment of Prof. Adamu Ahmed as the new Vice-Chancellor of the institution.

This is contained in a statement issued by Malam Auwalu Umar, the Director of Public Affairs of the university on Wednesday in Zaria.

The appointment of Ahmed, he said, was on Wednesday, after the 209th Special Council meeting, presided over by its Chairman, Alhaji Mahmud Yayale-Ahmed.

NAN reports that in June 2024, President Bola Tinubu appointed Prof. Ahmed, a distinguished scholar of urban and regional planning, as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Education, Kano.

Ahmed, an academic and administrator, has spent over three decades at the ABU, where he taught and mentored students.

His academic journey began at ABU, where he earned his first, second, and PhD degrees.

Ahmed has held various leadership positions, including Head of Urban and Regional Planning, Deputy Director of ABU Consultancy Services, and Director of the Directorate of University Advancement.

Tinubu approves N80bn for Alau Dam expansion

Tinubu commiserates with Makinde over brother’s death

President Bola Tinubu has approved N80 billion for the reconstruction and expansion of the Alau Dam in Borno.

Prof. Joseph Utsev, the Minister of Water Resources, confirmed this during a briefing with State House correspondents following the second FEC meeting of the year on Tuesday.

Utsev, also the chairman of the inter-ministerial committee on dams, revealed that the President had approved the rehabilitation of Alau Dam, pending ratification by the FEC.

The committee, established on Sept. 23, 2024, includes the ministers of finance, environment, works, information, and the National Security Adviser as members.

The committee was inaugurated on Oct. 2, 2024 with the goal of assessing dams nationwide and recommending improvements for better usage

A sub-committee, co-opting members from the Nigeria Society of Engineers, the Council for Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, and the Council of Dams Experts in Nigeria, was formed.

The committee has assessed around 35 dams and produced recommendations. An interim report was presented to the Federal Executive Council.

“So, the committee swooped into action and brought out recommendations of about 35 dams that have been assessed so far.

“Today the interim report was presented to the Federal Executive Council. The Alau Dam is very critical. We saw some challenges as a result of flooding on Sept. 10, 2024.

“The assessment of the remaining 34 dams is ongoing, and will be presented to the Federal Executive Council and the entire Nigerians,” Utsev said.

Utsev assured that the Borno government is working closely with the sub-committee to begin the project, aiming to complete the first phase before July.

He added that desilting will begin in December, with the entire project expected to take 24 months to complete.
