Foundation trains security agencies on International Humanitarian Law in Borno

The CLEEN Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, has commenced a two-day training programme for security agencies and other stakeholders in Borno on International Humanitarian Law, civilian protection and Civil-Military cooperation.

Declaring the training open on Wednesday in Maiduguri, the Executive Director of the foundation, Mr Gad Peter, said the training was to strengthen peace, human rights and security governance in security approaches to violent extremism in Nigeria.

Peter said the project would address gaps, and foster better civil-security relationships through inclusion, respect for human rights and accountability.

“CLEEN Foundation and International Alert are addressing these demands and contribute to stabilisation and peacebuilding in targeted LGAs in Borno, Plateau and Zamfara States,” Peter said.

He explained that the specific objectives of the programme were to improve the effectiveness of civilian oversight agencies to document human rights violations, enhance security sector accountability on rights violations and promote excellence in public safety and security.

Papers presented at the event included “Protection of Civilians and Civilian Harm Mitigation in Armed Conflicts and other Public Emergencies”, and “State Actors and the Promotion of Human Rights in Armed Conflicts”.
