In its move to arrest the spike in Violence Against Women and Girls, VAWG, the EU/UN Spotlight Initiative has commenced a 4-day engagement with journalists in Adamawa State.

In her welcome address, Spotlight Initiative Communications Coordinator, UNICEF, Khadijah Ibrahim-Nuhu said the rising cases of violence against women and girls are alarming, stressing the need for all stakeholders to come together and proffer solutions to it.

She noted that the four day session will offer journalists and other stakeholders the opportunity to bring the best solutions to resolving the menace which is repugnant and unacceptable in modern society.

Mrs Ibrahim-Nuhu specifically said goals 5 and 16 of Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) are primarily concerned with VAWG, noting that Spotlight initiative will continue to champion the rights of these vulnerable members of the society because their rights as members of the society is of paramount importance.

In her speech, the state Commissioner for Women Affairs, Lami Ahmad urged media practitioners to avoid writing reports that may lead to the stigmatization of VAWG survivors.

The commissioner, who was represented by the permanent secretary of the ministry, Saso Benson Ali, expressed concern over the ways some journalists report issues of violence against women and girls, saying that such reports further exposed the victims to stigmatization.

According to her, the reports are capable of discouraging the victims from opening up whenever they are assaulted.

The commissioner noted that the workshop is coming at the right time when cases of violence against women and girls are increasing across the globe, hence the need for journalists to intensify efforts in exposing violence against women in a diligent manner that would bring the menace to an end.

She also commended EU/UN for the initiative, especially their tireless efforts and commitments to tackling the challenges and other humanitarian interventions which continue to bring succour to the people.

Ms Benson-Ali assured the organisations of state government’s readiness to partner with them in the implementation of their programmes for the benefits of humanity.
