286

Ahead of the forthcoming Gubernatorial and House of Assembly Elections across the nation, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya has directed formation and unit commanders of the Nigerian Army to ensure that troops remain professional and apolitical.

Yahaya gave the charge while addressing formation and unit commanders across the country in preparation for the rescheduled 18 March 2023 polls.

The Army Chief, who praised the troops for their overall performance in providing security during the last presidential and National Assembly elections, warned them to abstain from any inducement, enticement, or cajoling that might jeopardize the security of the governorship and House of Assembly polls.

He also added that a secure and safe environment must be provided for the populace to fulfil their civic duty of choosing their leaders.

Gen. Yahaya warned the troops that any violation of the Code of Conduct for Operation Safe Conduct will result in serious repercussions.

He ordered the commanders to prioritize protecting vital national infrastructure while stepping up efforts to provide security support for the polls. He also advised them to be prepared to act quickly in the event of an emergency.

The COAS also reminded his commanders of the loyalty oath they took to uphold Nigeria’s sovereignty and insisted that the Nigerian Army must be seen by everybody as supporting Nigeria’s democracy.
