The management of Ekiti State University (EKSU) has announced the resumption of academic activities amid the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

According to NAN, Bode Olofinmuagun, the institution’s spokesperson, said the management took the decision at its meeting held on Monday. He added that the resolution was crucial for the institution’s survival.

Olofinmuagun, in a statement, said academic activities will resume at the varsity on Tuesday (today).

The spokesperson said at the meeting, the management discussed the impact of the ongoing national strike by all the four staff unions as it affects the university as well as academic and other activities.
“It noted further that one academic session (2021/2022) of admission is still outstanding, while the second semester of the 2020/2021 academic session is yet to be concluded,” the statement read.

“Moreover, the admission process for the 2022/2023 academic session will commence soonest.

“Consequently, management decided to reopen the Institution for normal academic activities in the interest of the students, parents, guardians and indeed the society at large as well as the survival of the university.”
ASUU had on February 14 declared a one-month warning strike to protest the non-implementation of its demands by the federal government.

But on March 14, the union extended the industrial action by eight weeks, citing the government’s failure to fully address its demands.

The union thereafter extended the strike by another 12 weeks.
